Not many people think that security is needed during fumigation because homes are typically tented during this time, but you’d be surprised what robbers are willing to endure to gain some stolen property.
According to fumigation experts, the chemicals under a fumigation tent can be fatally toxic to a human being the first day, but this reduces to 50%the second day, and even less on the third day. Surveillance footage from recent burglaries in settings such as this show burglars doing nothing more inside the house than putting a sweatshirt over their mouths when running in and out. With on site security present, this would not be possible.
As more criminals out there hear about the success of these type of break-ins, the incidents are on the rise. When you have a tented home, it is a message to criminals out there that your home will have no occupants for 2-3 days. For burglars, this is just a radar begging them to come take a visit. Having on site security is absolutely necessary to ensure your home is not the next one on their list.
In February, the property manager of a local condominium complex we regularly patrol called me for a quote for an onsite security guard during an extermination of pests. The job would have been for two days and was under $400.
She presented the quote to the Board of this property, as they make the decisions on how to spend their money. But after hearing the cost, they decided not to have security for the fumigation. At the time, it didn’t seem worth the cost when the buildings would be tented. Who would do anything illegal under a tent of chemicals, right?
Sadly, much to their surprise, they were robbed BIG TIME. Residents in the community lost a lot of valuables way in excess of the $400 it would have cost for a little protection. Had the residents used a portion of their HOA’s or paid a small additional payment toward the total cost of the security protection, it wouldn’t even have set them back. But not doing them most certainly did.
These homeowners lost valuables like jewelry and electronics. These types of items should be taken out of the house during the fumigation process. The majority of these crimes are happening at night when less people are around to notice cars coming into the fumigation area, especially in multi-home complexes. On site security guards are used to working graveyard shifts and not only would be awake, but actively patrolling your property through these nights to ensure no one gets in.
Lesson here is: Better be safe than sorry. They thought it was too expensive for having eyes and presence on site and it cost them much more. Our security officers are trustworthy and experienced in dealing with burglaries. Many of them are former law enforcement themselves and so take the safety of their residents seriously, along with the genuine desire to protect their homes.
If you own a single property or multiple properties on a complex and plan to tent and/or fumigate them for pests, call a security company to protect your assets. Better yet, call us!
